Overview

Green Mountain Transit (GMT) was on a mission to reboot Montpelier’s underused fixed-route public transit bus system. They enlisted Via to analyze the viability of replacing their underperforming buses and specialized transportation with microtransit. After completing the study, Via recommended a demand-based solution to increase public transit ridership and ease congestion and parking woes. In January 2021, GMT partnered with Via to launch MyRide, a pre-booking microtransit service. They cut three buses and added six dynamically-routed vehicles, covering a 5.5 square mile service area.

Solution

Via customized its solution in three ways. First, the pre-booking algorithm allows riders to schedule rides in the app or through the call center. Second, the software integrates with the city’s fixed-route schedule and Transit App, enabling riders to plan end-to-end trips across different modes of transportation. And last, the technology is also configured to allow NEMT booking and simultaneously report medical data so that the agency can file for reimbursement.

It provides flexible service on a flexible schedule...if there is nobody on the bus, our bus will wait for the next person to catch a ride. We are not driving around empty because we have a schedule that says we have to.”
