California HVIP announces steep discounts for hybrid and zero-emission vehicles

The incentives allow transit leaders to purchase electric buses for up to $85,000 off, and school districts to purchase electric school buses for up to $140,000 off.

Via Transportation •

A significant part of Via’s mission is to reduce the carbon impact of the transportation sector by offering efficient, shared rides that help reduce reliance on single-occupancy vehicles. While sharing is one way to reduce our carbon footprint, electrification is another major opportunity to reduce emissions from transportation.

That’s why we’re excited to share some very promising news out of California. Medium and heavy-duty electric vehicles are tough to find and even tougher to purchase given their hefty price tags. However, the California Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP for short) aims to even the playing field between gas guzzlers and low-emission vehicles.

Starting in spring 2021, HVIP is offering major incentives for purchasing hybrid and zero-emission buses, shuttle buses, school buses and other medium and heavy-duty vehicles. For transit leaders in California hoping to launch zero-emission microtransit services, this means you can purchase electric vehicle shuttle buses at up to an $85,000 discount. Additionally, school districts hoping to reduce their emissions can purchase school buses at up to a $140,000 discount. Fleet managers can buy up to 30 vehicles a year with these reduced prices, making this a great opportunity to fully electrify your on-demand fleet. Discounts are offered at point-of-sale, as well, so there’s no delay nor onerous paperwork to fill out.

At Via, we’ve had a lot of experience incorporating electric vehicles into public transit fleets as we’ve done in Sacramento, Jersey City, and Milton Keynes. Our technology helps drivers determine when and where to recharge their vehicles and proactively manages vehicle supply to ensure riders aren’t abandoned when EVs are offline.
