On May 27, the Federal Transit Administration announced $10M in competitive grants for FY21 through the Public Transportation on Indian Reservations (Tribal Transit) Program. Federally recognized Indian tribes or Alaskan Native organizations in rural areas with less than 50k in population are eligible to apply.
These grants can be used for any public transit project or program and are not restricted to capital grants, which means that both planning projects and operating programs are eligible expenses. A tribe could use the funding to conduct a transit planning study or to launch a rural microtransit project or on-demand service to aid non-emergency medical transit. There is no federal match required this year, therefore successful applicants could receive 100% of the funding necessary for their transit projects.
