Richmond’s successful on-demand public transit service celebrates Earth Month with free rides

April 19, 2023 (RICHMOND, CA) — The City of Richmond’s successful on-demand public transit service, Richmond Moves, will provide free rides on Friday, April 21 in recognition of Earth Month. The promotion will be automatically applied upon booking a ride.

Richmond Moves was launched in April 2022 with the goal of using innovative technology to fill access gaps in Richmond’s transportation ecosystem, which has historically lacked intra-city transit options and been long challenged by heavily polluted air. In just a year, Richmond Moves has served over 12,000 rides to help easily access opportunities and transit hubs in the region.

Richmond Moves allows anyone to book an on-demand electric vehicle ride from an app or by calling a phone number. The service uses advanced software from Via, the global leader in TransitTech, to match riders headed in the same direction into one electric vehicle, creating quick and efficient shared trips that provide more flexibility than traditional mass transit options.

New data validates Richmond Moves is making a positive environmental impact on the city – it is estimated to reduce emissions by more than 78%, and nearly 50% of rides replace trips previously served by single-occupancy vehicles. The popularity of Richmond Moves has continued to grow month over month, with March 2023 hitting an all-time high with nearly 2,600 rides served.

"I am thrilled to see the success of Richmond Moves and the positive impact it has had on our community,” said Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez. “This innovative on-demand public transit service has not only provided much-needed transportation options for our residents, but it has also helped increase transportation equity, improve air quality, and create jobs in our city. I look forward to seeing its growth in users and fleet size."
