The City of Torrance is excited to announce the expansion of service hours and coverage zone for Connect Torrance, the community’s on-demand transit program, following impressive ridership growth and operational efficiency during its first six months.

June 25, 2025 (TORRANCE, CA) – The City of Torrance is excited to announce the expansion of service hours and coverage zone for Connect Torrance, the community’s on-demand transit program, following impressive ridership growth and operational efficiency during its first six months.

Launched in December 2024, Connect Torrance,  offers a convenient, affordable, curb-to-curb transit option for anyone traveling within the City, whether it’s for work, errands, connecting to transit hubs, or exploring the community, without the need for a private vehicle. Connect Torrance now operates Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The expanded service zone now includes key destinations across central and east Torrance, making it easier than ever to get where you need to go. (See map below.)

New data reveals the early success of the Connect Torrance microtransit program:

  • Outstanding rider satisfaction with an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars

  • Strong ridership growth – with monthly rides nearly doubling between January and May

  • Quick service, with an average pick up time of just 9.5 minutes

  • Improved cost-efficiency, showing a decrease in cost per ride and per mile

  • Top destinations include:

    • El Camino College

    • Del Amo Fashion Center Mall

    • Torrance YMCA

    • Torrance Memorial Medical Center

    • Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center

    • Discovery Park.

“In just six months, Connect Torrance has proven to be a valuable step toward building a more connected and inclusive city, one where everyone can reliably access essential and leisure opportunities without needing their own car,” said David Mach, Transit Planning Manager for the City of Torrance.

How it works

Connect Torrance introduces a tech-enabled public transit option that makes getting around the City easier and more affordable. Riders within the service zone can book convenient, shared rides for a flat fee of $5 or $3 for residents 65 and older, through an easy-to-use mobile app powered by TransitTech provider Via. The app is free to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play or by calling (424) 688-9251.

The Connect Torrance zone was selected due to its proximity to the City’s main commerce and employment areas. The project is funded by a combination of LA Metro’s Measure M Visionary Seed Funds, Measure R Transit program funding administered by the South Bay Cities Council of Governments and Torrance Transit’s operating budget. Torrance Transit and the City are working to incorporate feedback from residents during the initial pilot phase, with the goal of optimizing service and expanding coverage in the future.

About Torrance Transit System (TTS)

Torrance Transit System (TTS) is a municipal transportation agency that serves the public in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. Our network consists of twelve (12) fixed-routes that extends to many areas outside of the City of Torrance, including the neighboring cities of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Carson, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, El Segundo, Lawndale, Lomita, Wilmington, and the City of Los Angeles including some unincorporated areas under the jurisdiction of Los Angeles County. Established in 1940, the Torrance Transit System began providing bus service between Torrance and Downtown Los Angeles. At that time, Torrance Transit used three leased, 1931 Mack-33 buses to help connect our community. Today, Torrance has grown to a fleet of 63 alternative-fueled (CNG) buses with approximately over 2 million riders annually. All buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps to accommodate persons with disabilities.  Torrance Transit also operates the Torrance Community Transit Program (TCTP), a taxi-based service to any destination in Torrance, for residents who are disabled or age 65 and older for a low fare of $5, $3 or $1 per trip—depending on household income and ambulatory status—for up to 12 trips per month.
