Memphis’s Groove On-Demand public transit service to offer free rides on Earth Day

April 21,2022 (MEMPHIS) — On Friday, April 22, Memphis’s Groove On-Demand public transportation service will provide free rides to all riders to celebrate Earth Day. There’s no catch — rides will be automatically free of charge when booked, and can be taken throughout the entire day from 6a.m. to 10 p.m. within Memphis Groove’s designated service zones.

Since last February, Groove On-Demand has provided residents and visitors with the ability to book on-demand, shared rides to travel in Downtown Memphis for only $1.25 (with discounted rates available to seniors, students, and those with disabilities). Rides can be booked easily through the Groove On-Demand smartphone app (available in the Apple app and Google Play stores) or by calling 901-763-8422.

The goal of Groove On-Demand is to use technology to expand access to sustainable, affordable, and equitable public transportation in Memphis. Due to the success it has seen in the last year, Groove service recently expanded its service hours to offer rides seven days a week. Many of the most popular pick-up and drop-off locations to-date have included essential destinations, such as hospitals, government buildings, grocery stores, and residential areas.

The service is powered by Via, the global leader in TransitTech. Via’s advanced algorithms match multiple passengers headed in the same direction to provide quick and efficient shared trips, without lengthy detours or inconvenient schedules.

Groove On-Demand is supported by a partnership between the Downtown Memphis Commission, Memphis Area TransitAuthority (MATA), and the Memphis Medical District Collaborative.
