Stuttgart, Germany, the country’s sixth-largest city, has a high volume of private cars on its roads and frequently struggles with high levels of air pollution. Looking to improve this situation, Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB), the city’s public transport operator, launched an on-demand service in 2018. In order to significantly expand and upgrade the offering, the SSB partnered with Via in 2021 to replace the previous provider.
SSB Flex 2.0 provides city-wide transit coverage at times and in places where traditional public transport falls short.
The service runs with an 11 vehicle fleet, and rides can be booked through an app or by phone in German or English. The new rider app that was introduced by Via has enhanced functionalities for the visually impaired and allows for smooth communication between riders and drivers. Additionally, the revamped service launched with a multimodal and intermodal integration, allowing riders to see within the app all transit options available in the city. Via’s advanced technology allowed it to migrate data from a previous provider and enable a smooth system transition in just a few weeks.
