FTA highlights on-demand microtransit across the country

From a suburban county in Ohio, to a populous San Francisco neighborhood, cities are increasingly adopting microtransit to address community needs. In its latest spotlight, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) highlighted two standout programs:

  • Lorain County, Ohio: In just four months, the county’s microtransit initiative provided over 6,000 rides, dramatically improving access to critical services for underserved areas.
  • San Francisco, California: Another example of a thriving microtransit model, designed to improve first- and last-mile connectivity in one of the city’s most underserved neighborhoods, bridging gaps in the existing transit network.

The FTA commended microtransit as “a new way to get to work, run errands, access healthcare, and more.” This recognition reflects a growing trend: microtransit is increasingly becoming a lifeline for communities where traditional transit options fall short.

At Via, we’ve had the privilege of partnering with municipalities like Lorain County and San Francisco, to design and implement these microtransit programs tailored to local needs. Time and again, we’ve seen how on-demand microtransit is enabling more accessible, livable communities by connecting residents to opportunities while helping cities adapt to growing populations and shifting transit needs.
