The bottom line.

From pilot to mainstream: three years, three expansions, and Birmingham On-Demand remains wildly popular, with more than 300K+ rides delivered. Via operates the service in partnership with the City of Birmingham the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Agency and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham to connect communities historically underserved by public transit to essential services like jobs, transit hubs, and grocery stores.

Half of riders report using the service to commute to work or school. In response to high demand, Birmingham On-Demand extended downtown evening hours and expanded the service zone to east Birmingham. The tech-powered solution has allowed Jefferson County to stay nimble, meeting demand when the World Games came to town in July 2022 and filling in gaps left by three sunsetted fixed-route lines in May 2023. Passenger satisfaction remains high, with a 4.8/5 average ride rating.

“I usually work overtime, so the new change in service hours helps me to facilitate my commute back home during the night shift.”
