Safety measures Via and Motional are taking to lessen COVID-19 exposure.

We’re working hard to ensure that every trip you take is as safe and worry-free as possible.

  • Face masks required. Everyone on board is required to wear a face mask or face covering. Passengers not wearing a face mask may be refused service.
  • Regular vehicle cleaning. Vehicles are being professionally sanitized in-between each ride and cleaned at the beginning and end of each day.
  • Wellness checks. In-app wellness checks help make sure passengers and drivers are symptom-free and ready to ride before they get going. Please stay home if you have either been diagnosed with COVID-19, think you’re exhibiting symptoms, or have been in contact with someone who has recently tested positive.
  • Constant evaluation. Regularly evaluating our safety measures to align with COVID-19 policies and regulations based on the current state of the response is a top priority.

How safe are the vehicles?

Motional vehicles have safety features embedded into their technology and two vehicle operators will be staffed in each vehicle at all times, so you’re in good hands.

We have logged over 1.5 million miles and provided over 100,000 rides with zero at fault incidents.

Why doesn’t the AV take the highway/freeway?

Right now we’re focused on serving the high-traffic destinations in Las Vegas.

Can the AV take a faster route?

We select our routes to provide safe, comfortable and efficient autonomous rides. While it’s possible there’s a faster route for your trip, it could be outside of our operating domain – where our vehicles are trained to operate autonomously.

How do I report a vehicle issue?

You can always provide feedback in the Via app or to the vehicle operators.

How does the AV recognize objects, pedestrians, construction cones, etc.?

If you turn your attention to the screen up front, you can see everything the car sees and senses, like other cars, trees, and traffic lights. There’s a sensor suite all around the car that detects both moving and still objects so it has a full 360 vision of what’s around us. There’s also a supercomputer behind your seat that enables this car to drive itself.

In order to detect traffic lights, our vehicles use two types of technology to detect traffic lights: vision (cameras) and Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC). The vehicles have over 20 sensors including LiDAR, radar, cameras, and GPS.

Does the AV recognize traffic lights?

Yes, our vehicles are able to collect and process traffic signal data in order to behave safely at intersections.

We use a combination of Dedicated Short Range Communication (smart city infrastructure) and on board vision cameras for redundancy.

How does the AV know when to stop?

Our vehicle’s robust sensor suite helps the car “see” it’s environment. Our AV software, which uses advanced machine learning, then helps the vehicle make sense of its environment and react.

Does the AV follow the speed limit?

Yes, we’ve programmed our vehicles to never speed and to abide by the law at all times.

Why can’t I use my flash camera in the car?

We prefer to avoid anything that might distract the vehicle operators in the front while they’re collecting data.

How do I know where to meet my driver?

We’ll assign you a “virtual bus stop” where you’ll meet the vehicle, usually at a nearby corner or no more than a block away. Check the app for directions and follow your driver’s progress in real-time so you know exactly when to head outside.

Yes. Tap the Favorites tab in the app menu, then tap Set Home Address, Set Work Address, or create and name a new favorite.

Zero Tolerance policy

Via has a strict Zero Tolerance policy. Driver partners are prohibited from driving on the Via Platform while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and riders are prohibited from consuming alcohol or drugs inside the vehicle. We do not tolerate inappropriate, threatening or violent behavior by anyone using the Via Platform or towards any riders or driver partners. If you are a rider and observe or believe any of the following, please ask the driver to terminate the trip immediately: your driver may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, your driver is behaving in a manner that you consider inappropriate or that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, or your driver engages in conduct which could be considered unlawful or illegal.

If you feel that you are in imminent danger, please contact the police directly by calling 911. After the ride has concluded, please provide feedback using the Via app, reply to the text message confirmation of your ride or call us at (725) 444-7350.

Anti-Discrimination policy

Via does not tolerate discrimination of any kind against our riders or driver partners. This includes discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, religious belief or affiliation, gender, sex, sexual identity or orientation, age, veteran status, physical, mental or other disability (actual or perceived), rider’s points of departure and destination, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal or state law. Additionally, Via does not tolerate discrimination of any kind against service animals. Riders or driver partners found to have violated Via’s anti-discrimination policy will lose access to the Via Platform. If you believe that you have been subject to discrimination by a rider or driver partner, please provide feedback in the review function of the Via app or call us at (725) 444-7350.

Cigarette policy

Smoking of any kind is prohibited, including e-cigarettes, vaporizers, or smokeless cigarettes.

Eating/drinking policy

We know that you are on the go, but please help us keep our vehicles clean and fresh and avoid bringing food and drink in our cars, when possible. Please also be mindful that smelly food can be distracting and unpleasant for your fellow passengers. All drinks should have lids and drinking alcohol or carrying open containers of alcohol in our vehicles is not allowed.

Phone call policy

Please remember your fellow passengers might not be interested in your phone conversations. We ask that you limit phone calls to quick logistics and emergencies during shared rides.

Luggage policy

Motional vehicles are a shared space, and as such we ask everyone to limit any personal items to a single piece of luggage or a reasonably-sized bag.

Pet policy

Licensed service animals are welcome to ride in Motional vehicles without restrictions. Non-service animals are also allowed, but must be in a pet carrier specifically designed to transport animals. The carrier may not be opened on the van, must be leak-proof and well ventilated, and be small enough to fit on the owner’s lap or on the floor space in the immediate area of the owner without blocking other passengers.

Age policy

Riders must be 13 years of age or older. Children under the age of 13 can ride with Via when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Via will not supply car seats, but riders traveling with children who require them may bring their own. Riders are responsible for securing any such car seat and for ensuring that it fits all legal requirements.
