Car-free living becomes a reality with regional, multimodal transit

High Valley Transit uses intermodal transit to make car-free living a reality for their rural mountain community.

The bottom line.

Fixed-route bus lines, on-demand microtransit, and paratransit work seamlessly together to make car-free travel an appealing option in rural Summit and Wasatch counties. Behind the scenes, a custom-tailored algorithm directs passengers to the right mode for their requested trip, balancing cost-efficiency, convenience, and rider ability needs.

High Valley Transit was born in 2021 as a brand-new transit agency with a multimodal, tech-powered approach to rural mobility. Via’s multimodal rider app and mode assignment logic makes their vision possible: fixed-route headways stay low —  as low as 15 minutes — while microtransit fills in the gaps with short wait times. Intermodal trips, combining fixed-route and microtransit, make cross-county travel possible for the first time without a private vehicle. Commingling paratransit and microtransit trips allows for more spontaneous paratransit travel and leads to greater operational efficiency.

I rely on HVT as part of my regular local commute strategy. I choose not to drive anymore and am hoping for expansion of services so that I never have to drive again.
